Stonewards Best Early Builds

Survive the first five waves with miner, warrior, and co-op role templates.

Last updated:

Early Stonewards runs fail for predictable reasons: empty ammo before wave three, unrepaired primary gates, or one player still underground when the horn returns. “Build” here means how you spend your first ore cycles—not a endgame meta loadout from hour ten. Banana Tiger Studio starts players with distinct classes such as miner and warrior (more unlock through hub progression), each with different gear and stat leanings.

These templates target waves one through five in demo and Early Access missions. Adjust numbers as patches change, but the priorities remain: function, then power.

Universal Early Rules

Before copying a class template:

  1. Identify the primary monster lane toward the King during wave one—repair that segment first every forge phase.
  2. Craft enough ammo for the next wave tier before rolling upgrades. See Ammo and Crafting.
  3. Mine shallow branches with clear exit paths until horn timing feels comfortable—How to Mine Fast explains routing.
  4. Surface before audio telegraphs intensify; co-op teams lose runs to absent miners, not DPS.

Use Resource Priority Checklist until these rules are automatic.

Warrior Early Build (Surface Focus)

Best for: Players who prefer wall defense, solo attempts learning combat, or co-op primary defenders.

Starting advantage: Combat-oriented gear suits holding gates while others mine.

First two forge cycles:

  • Cycle 1: Repair primary lane + minimum arrow craft at the crafting camp.
  • Cycle 2: Take knockback or armor if offered; otherwise craft extra ammo.

Third cycle onward: Add damage upgrades only when ammo stockpile covers two waves. Pair with Wave Defense positioning—warriors fail when they chase kills down broken side lanes.

Rings: Combat or armor rings over mining rings unless your squad explicitly needs you to mine.

Avoid: Deep cave solo trips while horn timers tighten; warriors who mine alone during wave three often return to a dead King.

Miner Early Build (Economy Focus)

Best for: Co-op supply roles, players who enjoy cave routing, or squads with two dedicated surface defenders.

Starting advantage: Mining efficiency and gear suited to breaking nodes quickly.

First two forge cycles:

  • Cycle 1: Haul stone for wall repair plus baseline metal for team ammo—communicate deposits.
  • Cycle 2: Craft speed or mining yield upgrade; skip combat-only buffs if defenders are stable.

Third cycle onward: Super jump stacks help surface quickly; do not take a third mobility stack before defenders confirm knockback or armor coverage.

Rings: Mining or craft speed rings align with role. Demo playtests warn against all four players taking mining rings while nobody picks combat utility.

Avoid: Hoarding ore in inventory instead of depositing at stations—forge power only exists after deposit.

Solo Early Build (All-Rounder)

Solo cannot split roles. Recommended path:

  1. Short mines with stone + metal priority from Ores and Materials.
  2. Forge priority: repair, ammo, armor, craft speed, then damage or knockback.
  3. Conservative horn timing—return at seventy percent of your comfort timer, not one hundred percent.

Solo deaths often look like bad upgrade RNG but are late returns from caves. Getting Started covers first-run mindset.

Co-op Four-Player Template

A stable early squad assignment seen in demo co-op:

PlayerRoleEarly upgrade bias
1Primary defenderKnockback, armor
2Secondary defender / repairArmor, ammo craft
3MinerMining yield, craft speed
4Runner / flexSuper jump, ferry ore

Flex player swaps to wall if a miner is late. Voice callouts: “horning soon,” “primary lane forty percent,” “need stone.”

Read How to Co-op in Stonewards for recovery when someone mis-times a mine.

Ore Budget Guideline (Early Waves)

Exact costs vary by patch, but mentally split each haul:

  • Forty percent — Wall repair and stone on primary lane.
  • Forty percent — Ammunition and basic consumables.
  • Twenty percent — One intentional upgrade aligned with your role.

Shift toward upgrades only after wave four if lanes stay above your agreed threshold and ammo stockpile covers two horns.

When Early Builds Break Down

Symptom: dying with full ore in inventory — Deposit and craft; you built a hoarder, not a defender.

Symptom: dying with fancy upgrades and empty quiver — Re-read Forge Upgrades priority order.

Symptom: King dies while you are deep mining — Shorten routes; super jump does not replace horn discipline.

Symptom: team wipes on wave five spike — Lobby reward votes may need wall buffs; see Upgrade Tier List for mid-run pivots.

Transitioning to Mid-Run Builds

After wave five, enemy pressure and upgrade offers diversify. Specialized pages matter more:

Demo missions often offer continue-or-extract choices around wave eleven—early build discipline determines whether you reach that decision with resources left.

Staying Current

Class stats and starting gear may change in Early Access. Early build philosophy from Banana Tiger Studio—mine, forge, defend in rhythm—should remain the spine even when numeric budgets shift.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Stonewards questions.

What is the best class for new players?

Warrior suits players who want to learn wall defense; miner suits players happy in caves. Both work solo with tighter timing on the miner path.

Should miners take combat upgrades early?

Usually no in co-op if defenders cover surface. Solo miners still need armor or craft speed before luxury damage.

How much ore should go to repairs early?

Roughly forty percent of early hauls on primary lane repair until lanes stay stable through wave four—adjust using [Resource Priority Checklist](/tools/resource-priority/).

When can I chase damage upgrades?

After ammo covers the next two waves and primary lane repair is caught up—typically after wave three in stable runs.

Do these builds work in the demo?

Yes. They reflect demo co-op and solo feedback ahead of Early Access on August 11, 2026.

Where do I go after wave five?

Pivot using [Upgrade Tier List](/builds/upgrade-tier-list/) and [Combat](/combat/) pages as pressure spikes.
