Stonewards Upgrade Tier List

Ranked forge bonuses for demo and Early Access runs—after ammo and repairs are covered.

Last updated:

Tier lists for Stonewards forge upgrades must come with a disclaimer: no upgrade outranks empty ammunition or a collapsed gate lane. Banana Tiger Studio’s loop kills teams that treat randomized forge offers like gacha pulls. This page ranks character upgrades after you meet baseline survival spend—repairs on the primary approach, enough crafted ammo for the next wave tier, and at least one teammate surfaced before the horn if you are in co-op.

Tiers reflect demo and pre–Early Access community runs ahead of the August 11, 2026 launch. Patch balance will move entries. Read Forge Upgrades first if the forge economy still feels opaque.

Tier List Assumptions

  • Mission is standard bastion defense with escalating waves.
  • Players understand How to Play Stonewards timing.
  • Ore haul is typical—not a speedrun empty mine, not a greedy deep cave wipe.
  • Ring choices from Rings and Relics complement but do not replace these tiers.

S Tier — Almost Always Worth Taking

Craft speed (co-op supplier role) — When one player owns crafting camp duty, craft speed multiplies team output. Horns start with loaded defenders instead of half-finished arrow batches. Less critical for solo if you already craft minimally, but still strong.

Armor (solo and primary defenders) — Extra effective HP keeps you on walls during repair gaps. Solo runs fail when the only player dies mid-craft; armor buys seconds to finish ammo. Co-op main tanks should stack this before luxury damage.

Knockback (gate defenders) — Controls swarms at choke points, reducing King damage during messy breaches. Pairs with Wave Defense focus fire. Weak if your team already plays elevated ranged with clear lanes.

A Tier — Strong With a Plan

Super jump (mobility roles) — Excellent for miners and runners who must surface quickly, reach high wall segments, or execute Bastion Fallback routes. Stack carefully: third or fourth jump stack helps less if ammo and repairs lag.

Damage or weapon-tier upgrades — Valuable once ammo is stable. Take after baseline craft when you know which weapon you will carry through the next two waves. Cross-check Weapons and Gear for class synergies.

Mining speed or yield bonuses — Strong when your team loses to economy, not combat mechanics. Avoid stacking on all four players—one dedicated miner buff often suffices.

B Tier — Situational

Pure mobility without combat payoff — Extra speed matters for ferry roles but hurts teams when every player takes mining buffs and nobody knocks enemies off the King lane.

Niche utility upgrades — Situational picks that shine only with specific lobby rewards or relic combos. Documented further in Rings and Relics.

Luxury consumable enhancers — Good if you already stockpile through Ammo and Crafting; weak if you skip repairs to afford them.

C Tier — Usually Skip Until Fixed

Redundant stacks — Fourth stack of the same bonus when your team lacks a complementary role (e.g., all super jump, zero knockback).

Upgrade before repair gambles — Not a real upgrade type, but a player habit that belongs in C tier behavior. Fix lanes first.

Offers that do not match your death reason — If you died to empty ammo, skip another damage buff until crafting catches up.

Role-Based Quick Picks

Co-op Duplication Rules

Before accepting an upgrade, ask: does another player already cover this role? Stonewards co-op scales pressure; it does not scale duplicate mining buffs into victory. How to Co-op in Stonewards recommends explicit role callouts at run start.

How Lobby Rewards Change Tiers

Team-wide wall or damage lobby picks shift value. A bastion buff might drop repair stations from S-tier urgency to A-tier for one cycle, freeing ore for craft speed. Re-evaluate tiers each wave, not once per run.

Comparison to Ring Choices

Rings persist for the run slot until replaced and compete with forge rolls for your four blacksmith picks. High-tier rings can bump a B-tier forge offer into skip territory. Low-tier duplicate rings should lose to S-tier forge upgrades.

Using This Tier List in Practice

  1. Finish Resource Priority Checklist spend.
  2. Identify your role for the next two waves.
  3. Pick the highest tier upgrade that fixes your last failure mode.
  4. Log deaths—if tier list picks do not change outcomes, your bottleneck is timing (How to Mine Fast) not RNG.

Staying Current

Early Access will add enemies, ores, and upgrade pools. Revisit this list after major patches noted on Steam. Tier philosophy stays constant: function before flash.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Stonewards questions.

What is the best forge upgrade in Stonewards?

There is no universal best. After ammo and repairs, craft speed for suppliers and armor or knockback for defenders rate highest in most demo runs.

Should I always take super jump?

Only if mobility fixes your role—miners surfacing late or defenders reaching breaches. Skip extra jump stacks if repairs or ammo are behind.

Does this tier list apply to solo?

Yes, but solo favors armor and craft speed over team-only supply roles. See solo notes in [Best Early Builds](/builds/best-early-builds/).

How do rings affect upgrade value?

Rings stack with forge bonuses. Duplicate effects drop forge upgrades in value—read [Rings and Relics](/items/rings-and-relics/).

When should I ignore the tier list?

When primary wall lanes are below your HP threshold or ammo is under the next wave minimum. Survival spend always comes first.

Will Early Access change these ranks?

Almost certainly. Banana Tiger Studio plans deeper upgrade systems. Re-check this page after major balance patches.
